Inauguration Day

By Thomas Krehbiel

I have a little bit of Inauguration Fatigue, so I don't have much interest in talking about the new president.  Everything I said before still stands:  My expectations are low, and I can only appreciate the racial significance of the event from an academic point of view.  There's no doubt it's a historic event, but it doesn't really affect me on a personal level.

I haven't seen The Speech yet; I only overheard bits of it from a television in the background at work.  What I heard sounded appropriate but somewhat pedestrian.  I hope they play it again tonight so I can watch it with Mrs. Krehbiel.  (That was a joke -- it will be impossible to avoid seeing it replayed and analyzed 50,000 times.)

As for the outgoing president, I'm not sad to see Bush go, although I do think he (like all presidents) got a bad rap for things that weren't necessarily his fault.  (For example, I still don't fully understand why he was crucified over Katrina.)  But for all his missteps, I can honestly say that my life is considerably better now than it was when he took office, so I won't judge him too harshly.

It's nice to see the country celebrating an election for a change.  I look forward to seeing how the conservative media machine attempts to squash the country's enthusiasm and regain control of our lives.

UPDATE: Just saw the ceremony in its entirety. Obama's speech was better than I gave him credit for above.
